Nonesuch Records to release new song by Academy Award-nominated Randy Newman, "A Few Words in Defense of Our Country," January 30 exclusively on iTunes
January 24, 2007
Lyrics appeared in NY Times op-ed piece today
Since he began performing it recently on tour, Randy Newman’s new song “A Few Words in Defense of Our Country,” has received much interest. An abridged version of the lyrics ran in an op-ed piece in today’s New York Times—-timely, in light of last night’s State of the Union address. The song will be available to purchase exclusively at iTunes January 30.
Newman said: "I don't like to write songs about current events. This one, for instance, won't be relevant when this administration is no longer with us. It's such a unique administration, though, that I thought it would be interesting to write something about it. I don't think we'll ever have one like it again."
Randy Newman has also just received an Academy Award® nomination for his original song “Our Town,” which is featured in the movie Cars. This is the composer’s seventeenth Oscar® nomination.
A Los Angeles native, four-time Grammy winner Randy Newman is known for writing quirky, darkly funny, and sharply satirical songs. The Los Angeles Times called him a "brilliant songwriter who, like Paul Simon and a few others, bridges the gap between the classic American Songbook craftsman tradition and the more personalized singer-songwriter style of the modern pop age."
