Randy Newman his old classic self

A review of a recent concert in Baton Rouge, from The Advocate.

[Randy Newman] often writes story and character songs. He's paints a happy portrait of a self-satisfied factory worker in the Southern-spiced "Birmingham." "Dixie Flyer," an audience favorite, tells a rare autobiographical tale. The song's characters include Newman's own homesick mama. She's a lonely young woman in Los Angeles during World War II, longing for family back in New Orleans.

Obviously, Newman couldn't get out of Baton Rouge without playing the song of his own composition that became a post-Hurricane Katrina hymn. Based on the Mississippi River flood of 1927 though "Louisiana 1927" is, its evocative snapshot lyrics and pleading chorus resonated with 2005's flood- and hurricane-generated destruction. The song is an American classic, just like its composer.
