Ringing the Way at UCLA

Ringing the Way is a UCLA Centennial project to program the iconic Powell Library Bells with original works by UCLA musicians, played on the carillon in Schoenberg Music Building.

New music will be added throughout the 2019-20 academic year to highlight the incredible musical contributions Bruins artists have made. The project will culminate with a competition for new music written by current UCLA students.

The winning music will be performed on the carillon and will be published as an open access music score in the UCLA Music Library’s Contemporary Score Edition in conjunction with the Library’s Centennial initiative, OpenUCLA.

Ringing the Way re-imagines the Powell Library Bells for the UCLA Centennial and will transform them into a sound-beacon for the Library. It is a metaphor for the Library’s commitment to open access: the music is accessible to all campus visitors.

The music is arranged by current UCLA music graduate student Nick Carlozzi (’16, MA ’20) and Matthew Vest, and performed by Carlozzi.
